A NEW church and community centre could be built in Prittlewell... but the cash needs to be raised first.

Plans have been revealed for the major project at St Stephen’s Church, but £50,000 is needed so the plans can be completed and submitted to the council.

The new centre will replace the church’s existing dilapidated facilities.

Alongside the chapel and worship hall, there will also be a community cafe, soft play area, a play area, a multi-use space and kitchen.

The Rev Colin Baldwin, the priest-in-charge at St Stephen’s, will stage a 1,000 mile-cycle over ten days this July as part of the drive, visiting the majority of cathedrals in the south of England and the Midlands.

The Rev Baldwin, himself a former architect, said: “Our existing centre is used by a broad range of individuals within the community, from elderly and isolated people, to youth and children.

“With partners, we provide debt advice and other support measures, as well as staging social events, making it a centre of activity. Although St Stephen’s continues to provide much-needed support in a deprived area, the community deserves a fantastic place to gather and celebrate.”

He added: “Unfortunately, we have had to reduce or close much of this good work due to the condition of the hall in particular.

“The buildings and outdoor play space are both past their best and it is uneconomic to repair them.

“Our vision is to build new community and church facilities, revitalise the playground and reinvigorate a strong sense of community.

“Allowing St Stephen’s to expand its important community work and accommodate a growing congregation, the new development will provide the local community with a much broader range of services and facilities alongside the chapel and worship hall.”
