PLANS for a crazy golf course at the site of a former night club have been given permission to tee off.

Adventure Leisure will be converting Chicago’s, at Festival Leisure Park, Basildon, into an indoor crazy golf centre.

The firm will open a Mr Mulligans venue with two crazy golf courses, a bar and a restaurant.

Company bosses say the new centre will be open during the spring.

The venue will employ 20 people – more than the nightclub.

Alan Davies, Labour councillor for Fryerns has welcomed the news.

He said: “I think this is a great use of the facility and it will create jobs for the area.

“It is good to have venues like this that can cater for all the family rather than a places for a niche audience, such as nightclubs.

“I know there have been issues before with the nightclubs.

“I think it will be popular as the nearest crazy golf is in Southend.

“I look forward to it and think it’s good going forward.

“It means people can spend even more time at the leisure park as we have lots of family venues and activities including the indoor play centre and the go karting.”

The proposed opening times are 10am until midnight every day.

It comes as the bosses at Festival Leisure Park announced a major revamp including a new outdoor events area.

The refurbishment and development works are already underway.

The park will also see relining of the car park spaces.

There will also be a new larger outside event area – to include public seating and new flooring.

The refurbishment will see new flooring and glass works undertaken in the main atrium with impressive new lighting installed.

Chicago’s bosses announced its closure in December, but changed their minds to take advantage of the Christmas and New Year party season.

The club eventually closed in January.

Mr Mulligans was contacted for comment on the development but did not respond before the Echo went to press.
