A COUNCILLOR has apologised after he was accused of urinating in the garden of David Beckham’s sister.

Maldon councillor Mark Durham was caught short while canvassing in Tollesbury for the May local elections.

While needing to use the toilet, he panicked when he was unable to find a suitable area away from any properties in time.

Lynne Beckham claims Mr Durham urinated in her garden.

In a statement to the BBC, Mr Durham said: “I am sincerely sorry for any embarrassment or anger that this has caused.

"I had been canvassing on a cold day and with a chill in my kidneys. I got an urgent need to pass water and in terror looked for somewhere private.

"I tried to make an apology but it was to no avail.

"I certainly would never dream of doing anything like this in public and I made considerable effort to get to a safe location.

"From the aerial photo, this does not appear to be on the property belonging to Ms Beckham."

Mr Durham has since left his local Conservative group.

Essex Police investigated the claims of a man urinating in the garden in Tollesbury at 11.30am on April 6.

A spokesman said: “After further investigation by officers, it has been determined that no criminal offences have been committed.”

Maldon District Council said it would not comment on the matter.
