Both the driver and the passenger, who appear uninjured, quickly picked up the bike and fled the scene. It is understood to have happened at about 2pm on Friday.

The footage showing the incident has now been shared hundreds of times on social media, after originally being posted by the people in the car which hit the moped rider.

Essex Police confirmed it had had reports of dangerous riding on Marine Parade, as well as having a report of the crash.

The rider and passenger are yet to be identified, and police are appealing for information to locate them.

It has been claimed that the moped had no registration plate and that the driver “stunk of drink”.

The footage was initially posted with the message: “Some moped driver decided to run a red light earlier today into our car and my one-year-old was in the back.

“If we [were] one second later [they] would have hit my baby.

“This was along the seafront at the Kursaal.

“The driver had no number plate on and stunk of drink.”

A spokesman for Essex Police said: “We received reports of a collision at the junction of Marine Parade and Eastern Esplanade, Southend, at around 2pm on Friday, April 12.

“A woman reported on Saturday, April 13, that a motorbike was in collision with her vehicle before two people on the bike left the scene.

“There were no reported injuries.
