POLICE are investigating after thieves stormed a pub and stole thousands of pounds worth of alcohol.

The break-in took place at the Mews pub, in Nelson Mews, Southend, on Monday night and owners returned on Tuesday morning to find a large amount of alcohol had been taken from the bar.

In a public post shared on social media, the owner said: “Last night we were broken into and had everything taken from our premises.

“If anybody is attempted to be sold any alcohol from somebody who doesn’t seem legitimate please get in touch with us.”

It is unknown how much, if any, damage was done to gain access to the property.

The owners added: “Any help from our local community would be greatly appreciated while we attempt to catch the burglar.”

The appeal was shared across social media and police are now appealing to anyone for information about the theft which took place at the heart of the town centre.

A spokesman for Essex Police said: “We are appealing for information following a burglary at The Mews in Nelson Mews, Southend.

“We were called just after 7.40am on Tuesday, April 23.

“It was later established that a large amount of alcohol, estimated to be a four-figure sum, had been taken from the premises.”

The pub, which offers “fine dining and exquisite luxury” as well as calling itself “Southend’s best kept secret”, will be open as normal from today.

The owners of the pub declined to comment on the incident when contacted by the Echo.
