A MANHUNT for a gang member convicted of stealing tens of thousands of pounds' worth of jewellery has been called off.

Essex Police are no longer looking for Darren Girling after a man was arrested last night.

Girling was found guilty of his role in the raid at Chelmsford Crown Court, but failed to attend court and went on the run.

A spokesman for the police said: "We are no longer looking for Darren Girling for failing to attend court

"A 42 year-old man was arrested tonight and is currently in custody.

"Thank you for all your help and support."

The victim, a woman in her 70s, was sleeping in bed when one of them climbed on top of her, grabbed her and demanded she show them where her safe is.

The men then took money and jewellery as well as an air pistol, which was in a gun safe.

Darren Girling was later charged with burglary with violence, while Jamie Langley, 29, of London Road, Westcliff was charged with burglary.

Alan Girling, of Seaview Parade, St Osyth, was charged with perverting the course of justice.

While the Girlings denied the charges against them, Langley admitted burglary.

Darren and Alan Girling were convicted on May 8.

At the same trial another man, Sonny Lawson, 23, of Furtherwick Road, Canvey, was cleared of aggravated burglary.
