CAMPAIGNERS are calling for action after three accidents in as many weeks in a Rayleigh “rat run”.

The three incidents took place in The Chase, with the most recent happening on Wednesday. Councillors and residents are now calling for speed humps.

Councillor Cheryll Roe, told the Echo: “There are accidents on a weekly basis, there’s clearly a problem.

“I’m very concerned; someone will get killed along there soon, I have a duty of care for my residents.

“I’ve been to every house along there to ask them to fill out a survey.

“Raised roads near the junctions would slow the traffic down, they’re really working at the Grove Road end.”

Mrs Roe stated that she had been working with the neighbourhood watch in the town to conduct speed watches along The Chase.

Geoff Sandford, 72, one of the co-ordinators at the neighbourhood watch, said: “I’ve been trying to get something done for three years now, I’ve been banging my head against the wall.

“I’ve surveyed 149 houses and they all told me about accidents where cars drive into their gardens because of their speed.

“Raised road at the junctions or mini roundabouts would be ideal.”

Both Mr Sandford and Mrs Roe called for Highways England and the county council to listen to their requests.

Mrs Roe added: “There’s so many lampposts which have been knocked over and have been left unrepaired.”

Mr Sandford urged those in power to do something about the serious problem, saying: “It beggars belief the nonsense they come out with.

“I’ve put so many ideas forward.

“Highways are blocking everything we’re trying to do.

“The accident on Wednesday is an example of how serious the problem is, one of the cars was travelling too fast.”

Essex Police confirmed that the crash on Wednesday was between two cars, and no-one was seriously injured.

A spokesperson from Essex County Council, said: “A speed survey is arranged and the panel will consider whether any safety measures are justified.”
