TRAFFIC through roadworks came to a standstill after a car got wedged underneath a lorry.

Police, ambulances and the fire service were called to Harwich Road in Colchester following a crash near the roundabout.

Harwich Road was blocked near the junction with Ipswich Road after the crash which happened at about 12.50pm yesterday.

Drivers were advised to avoid the area but most were stuck in tailbacks lasting more than half an hour.

A car is believed to have been trapped by a lorry which was trying to navigate around the roundabout.

The ambulance service was called and they sent one ambulance and a rapid response vehicle.

No-one is believed to have been seriously injured.

A spokesman for the fire service said a fire engine from Weeley, Brightlingsea and Colchester attended.

They said: “Firefighters assisted at the scene of a road traffic collision.

“On arrival, crews advised that two vehicles had been involved in the collision - one car and one heavy goods vehicle.

“Firefighters managed to release the casualty by 2.11pm before leaving them in the care of the ambulance service.”

Traffic around the area had been a nightmare all day due to Ipswich Road South being closed.

Phil Suarez, who runs Jennifleurs, in St Christopher Road, has warned the Ipswich Road works could bring the town to a halt if urgent action is not taken.

He said: “The major delays are going to come back again, already on the news there are reports of Colchester being gridlocked, particularly around East Street and Brook Street.

“I’m not surprised there was a crash there. trying to navigate around the makeshift roundabouts it’s very tight when cars try to swing around.

“This sort of thing didn’t happen before. There is no easy way to get around it.”

We contacted the ambulance service for an update.

They said one person was taken to Colchester Hospital for treatment.
