FOUR men are driving from Billericay to Italy to raise money for a social club – and are looking forward to driving through a scene in an iconic film.

The rally, “the Skinflint Rally – The Italian Job”, which isn’t a race, will pass through the Great St Bernard’s Pass, which features in the opening scene of the Italian Job.

The group are fundraising for the Billericay Round Table by driving from the town to Turin across four days this month. Set a budget of £800 to buy and prepare their car for the journey, from September 12 to 16, the men have bought a Rover 75. Simon Poole, 44, one of the four drivers, told the Echo that everyone is looking forward to the drive: “A few of the Billericay Round Table guys have always wanted to do it. “We’ll be driving on the road that is in the famous film. We’re all excited about that.

“It’s going to be an interesting drive down! For some reason we’ve decided to drive back again. Everyone else is flying back.

“That’s if we make it that far! “There’s 12 teams taking part and everyone else is setting off from Coventry. We’re meeting them at Dover.

“We’re all insured on the car so we’ll be taking turns along the way.

“It will all be fun and games for sure.”

The four have set a target of £1,500 to be raised for the round table, which offers social opportunities for people in and around Billericay. The club organise the annual firework display in November and and an Easter egg hunt in the spring.

The club also takes part in events such as the Billericay Christmas fair, go karting, brewery tours, and trips abroad.

Mr Poole added all four drivers are “round tablers” and wanted to give something back: “We all are closely connected to the club. The money we raise will all go towards children in the nearby area.

“We want to raise more than the target we’ve set.”

The money raised so far is£500.

The other drivers, Marcus Bennett, 43, Gabriel Dascalu, 31, and Daniel Jackson, 43, all from Billericay, have posted a video on social media, the first time residents were able to see the modified Rover.
