BASILDON mayor David Burton-Sampson was invited to learn more about the work at a community centre.

Mr Burton-Sampson said he really enjoyed his visit to the King Edward Community Centre, in Laindon.

He said: “It was lovely to visit and talking to the volunteers, community groups and residents at the King Edward Community Centre in Laindon.

“I also had the chance to hear about the brilliant knitted poppy project they are currently doing.

“I am even getting my own mayoral knitted poppy.”

The centre said it was good to have Mr Burton-Sampson along.

The project is asking residents to create 888,246 poppies to commemorate fallen soldiers and collect cash for the Royal British Legion.
