Healthcare staff across Essex have come together to raise more than £4,300 for Cancer Research UK.

Staff from NHS Mid Essex Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) are going to walk the Shine Night Walk, a marathon-length sponsored walk, organised by Cancer Research UK, which takes place through the night each autumn.

The team – called ‘NHS Livewell’ – started as part of a staff challenge to be more active, mindful and give a little back to the community.

Spokesman Caroline Rassell, Accountable Officer for Mid Essex CCG said: “We are really excited to take part in such an important event for Cancer Research UK.

“This event and the preparation for it had not only been beneficial for the charity but also for our well-being as it had pushed to take part in more walks and exercise more than ever.

“The NHS Livewell team have done an amazing job by raising such a huge amount of money for the cause.”

The team, which has now grown to 28 walkers, has been on several practice walks of 12,16 and 20 miles. They said they were “tough at times, but valuable learning experiences.”

Marketing manager James Sharp said: “I went outside of my comfort zone when signing up for this marathon walk, but I’m glad I did.

“Not only have I upped my overall exercise, but I have bonded with teammates I wouldn’t normally get the chance to spend time with.

“I am very much looking forward to the big night.”
