TWO men were left injured after a large gang of men and women attacked them and set their pitbull on them during an attempted robbery.

The incident took place in the middle of the afternoon in Peterborough Way, Basildon, near the Craylands estate.

They told police officers a gang of about 12 people, believed to be six men and six women, aged in their late teens or early 20s, approached them.

After demanding their belongings, one of the victims was punched during the attempted robbery and the other man was bitten by a dog which was described as a pitbull.

Essex Police has been unable to confirm whether the victims required hospital treatment for their injuries or what the gang attempted to steal in the incident.

The attack has left members of the community concerned.

One woman, who lives in the area and asked to remain anonymous, said: “I can’t believe something like this would happen in the middle of the day.

“Is it not safe to leave our houses anymore? I hope the police catch these vile people.”

Detectives are now appealing for witnesses to the attack which took place at about 3.15pm on Saturday and are asking anyone who may have information to get in touch.
