THESE nostalgic adverts from 1935 show that people were keen to look their elegant best during the autumn season.

The ads were all printed in the Southend Standard in October of 1935 and were hoping to target Southend shoppers who wanted to keep warm and smart as the colder days and nights arrived.

Among them is an advert for ladies tweed coats and fur felts at Dixons department store in Victoria Circus, Southend, as well as an ad for men’s overcoats at Raven’s in Southend

Taylor and Brown of the Broadway Leigh had come up with the catchy slogan ‘Let’s be Reasonable and Seasonable’ with its new stock of tailored men’s overcoats while Dolcis in High Street, Southend was advertising its women’s shoes to fit ‘fashionably clad feet’.

In particular the shoe specialist store was promoting the ‘colour of the moment’ which was green.

“All the way from walking shoes in bottle green to evening shoes in the lightest pastels, green is the colour of the moment,” describes the advertisement.
