PEOPLE who attack police "have no respect" according to Colchester Council's safety boss after an officer was hospitalised after being repeatedly punched.

A team were on patrol in Colchester town centre when they were made aware of a disturbance in St Botolph’s Street at 3.10am on Thursday.

They discovered the row and tried to calm the situation down.

However, the officer was then punched in the face numerous times.

A 33-year-old man from Colchester was arrested. He was yesterday in custody for questioning.

The officer suffered injuries to his mouth and was taken to hospital for treatment.

Colchester Council’s public safety boss Mike Lilley (Lab) said he was disgusted at the attack.

“It is shocking that a police officer, who put themselves on the line every day, can be attacked here in Colchester,” he said.

“I am particularly worried they do not seem to have any respect for the police.

“I hope his injuries are not too serious, he makes a full recovery quickly and is back out doing his job again before too long.”

Mr Lilley added once the person responsible had been brought to justice, an investigation will be launched.

He added he hoped whoever had attacked the police officer would be given an appropriate sentence and also banned from any venues in the town.

Earlier this year, a thug who headbutted a volunteer police officer before kicking him in the head as he lay prone on the floor was jailed for six years.

Jack Hudson, 20, of Bromley Close, Clacton, also punched another officer before fleeing and hiding in an alleyway.

He admitted admitted to grievous bodily harm with intent and actual bodily harm when he appeared in court.

Police are now appealing for witnesses to the latest assault.

They have asked for anyone with information to call Colchester police station on 101 quoting crime reference 42/192046/19 or alternatively contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
