Wickford is set become the latest location for a new JD Wetherspoons pub as Basildon

Council agrees terms with the popular chain.

The new Wetherspoons will be built on the old Market site, at the end of Market Lane, off Wickford High Street and will form a key part of the Council’s future plans for regeneration of Wickford Town Centre.

The site is part of the ex Market and was retained following the development by the council of the new surgery.

Chairman of the Town Centre Revival Committee and Leader of the Basildon Council Councillor Gavin Callaghan said: “This has been a long time in the making but the Council has been working hard to ensure we have the best deal for Wickford residents. This is great news for the community.

“Wetherspoons provide good value on both food and drink and are a well-established brand. We were clear we wanted this site developed in a way that benefited the community and I look forward to seeing a detailed planning application coming forward in the New Year.”

Chairman of the Neighbourhoods and Public Spaces Committee Councillor David Harrison added: "It's great news - having been working over the past three years to get this over the line. At last the worst kept secret in Wickford is coming to fruition."
