A BRAINTREE railway station saw one of the biggest rises in usage in 2019.

Data from the Office and Rail Road shows 91,000 people used Braintree Freeport, meaning usage went up 17.2 per cent from 2018.

The busiest station in Essex last year was Chelmsford, with 8.6m passengers going to and from the station.

Greater Anglia's commercial customer service director Martin Moran said: "With the rising costs of travelling by car, increasingly congested roads and the need for all of us to reduce our carbon footprint, more and more people are choosing to travel by train.

"We expect that as we continue to transform rail travel in East Anglia with our brand-new fleet of longer trains and upgraded stations, and with our great value fares and advance fares, even more people will make the switch."
