A CHURCH hall roof has been badly damaged following a fire.

Firefighters were called out to the building in Sutton Road, Rochford, around 11.49pm on Friday.

Crews arrived to find half of the church, which measures 20 metres by 10 metres, was alight and the fire had spread to the roof.

It took firefighters more than an hour to get the blaze under control.

It was eventually extinguished by 12:58am and then crews worked to make the scene safe.

Essex Fire and Rescue says the roof suffered "extensive fire damage" and the rest of the building has suffered some smoke damage.

An investigation has been carried out but the fire service says the cause is not known.

It has been recorded as accidental or deliberate.
