A COUPLE have lived with their home shaking every time a bus drives by for the past six years.

Glen and Janette Bull, who live on Western Esplanade, Canvey, have got large cracks in virtually every room of their home thanks to the shaking, which happens every time a large vehicle, such as a bus or a lorry, drives by.

As a result, the couple fear that part of their roof could be at risk of collapsing.

Janette, 53, said: “Our house sits between The Welcome Hut and the Labworth area, and every single time a lorry or bus goes past the house violently shakes.

“The cracks have got so bad - they’re in the hallway, the bedroom, the spare room, our own bedroom and the ceiling in the kitchen. The tiles in our en-suite are actually cracking as well and the mirror repeatedly flaps off the wall.

“I’m tired of lying in bed or sitting on the sofa and having everything rattle every 20 minutes. We’re really worried that a section of our roof could fall down.

“It’s out of our control and has been happening ever since we moved in six years ago. Sooner or later a one pence coin will fit through the gaps.”

The couple first contacted the council about the issue two years ago.

Frustrated that action is yet to be taken, Glen, 53, added: “This has been an ongoing problem for us, The house literally rattles because the road wasn’t made for buses or lorries.”

A spokesman for County Hall said: “Our inspectors can only carry out an assessment of the visible deterioration of the highway. This is a concrete road which our electronic survey vehicle report shows to be in generally good condition.

“However, like most ageing concrete roads, repairs are needed at intervals. Repairs were carried out here to different sections in 2018 and patching and crack repairs in summer 2019.

“As with all concrete roads there are joints between sections of the road because of how it was built and some other uneven areas which may result in a little extra noise from passing buses and HGVs.”
