A teenager was attacked by a violent gang near a busy train station.
The 17-year-old boy was approached by the group of teenagers at around 11.15pm on Sunday, in Victoria Avenue, Southend.
They punched him several times, causing minor injuries.
No items were reported as stolen.
Despite friends' claiming there was knife involved, police are yet to confirmed if any weapons were used.
A police spokesman said: "We are investigating a report of an assault in Southend on Sunday February 23.
"We would also like to speak to those who were in the area around the time and witnessed the incident or any suspicious behaviour.
"Anyone with information are asked to contact us on 101, quoting incident 1198 of the 23rd February. Information can also be given completely anonymously to independent charity Crimestoppers by calling 0800 555 111 or visiting crimestoppers-uk.org."
