A YOUNGSTER has raised £2,000 after shaving his hair off in memory of his mother.

Isaac Sapala, seven, shaved his hair off on the anniversary of his mother Sarah Sapala’s death.

The Wickford youngster had been growing out his hair for the past year and wanted to do something special to honour his mother’s memory and raise money for the NHS during the coronavirus pandemic.

Mrs Sapala worked as a midwife for the Maidstone and Tumbridge Wells NHS Trust before dying from cancer on May 19, 2019 aged 46.

Isaac, along with his two siblings, laid their mother to rest on Tuesday last week and then shaved his head on the same day.

Alex Sapala, Isaac’s father, said: “Isaac had been looking to do something to make mum proud in the the year since her passing last year.

“She had worked as midwife and nurse and when Covid-19 started he thought of the idea with his aunt, Jacqueline Turner, of raising money for the NHS in memory of mum as that’s what she would have been doing, helping people fight the virus.

“He thought it would be a fitting tribute to offer to cut his hair which he loved and had been growing into an afro for a long time.”

Isaac set out to raise £100 amongst his friends and family and was amazed at how it went to nearly £2,000.

Mr Sapala said: “It was a very emotional day for us all, but we’re very proud of Isaac for doing what he has done.

“The amount of money he has raised has been incredible.

“He is very grateful and thankful to all the people who have kindly donated to support this noble cause and helped him make his mum proud, as I know she would be.

“I know that had she been alive today she would have been doing her part helping people fight the coronavirus.”

Isaac’s GoFundMe page has so far raised more than £1,920 pounds and donations are continuing to come in.
