A group of travellers have set up camp in a Basildon car park.

The travellers have set up an illegal encampment in the Beacon Field car park, off Dry Street in Langdon Hills.

Around 15 vehicles have "taken over" the car park, and according to Kerry Smith, the deputy leader of Basildon Council, the group are preventing walkers using the Westley Heights park.

Essex Police officers are due to attend the site after Mr Smith reported the travellers to the force last night.

The Essex County Traveller Unit have also been contacted by the deputy leader.

This latest incursion is the third in as many years at the site.

In a letter sent to the leader of Thurrock Council, councillor Rob Gledhill, Kerry Smith said: "I'm asking for your direct assistance to help residents enjoy the Westley Heights, against a selfish minority that have occupied the Beacons Field car park off Dry Street.

"Can Thurrock Borough Council take steps to apply for legal injunction/s or possibly heights barriers to prevent further traveller incursions at this car park please?"

Essex Police has been contacted for a statement.
