FOOTBALL fans are being urged to throw their weight behind a new charity set up in memory of an iconic player.

The Kevin Beattie Foundation is named after the legendary Ipswich Town and England defender, who died in September, aged 64.

Clacton-based Blues superfan Malcolm Thompson was a close friend and previously hosted a successful nostalgia night in the seaside town, featuring Town legends Paul Mariner, Brian Talbot and Eric Gates.

Now he has set up the foundation to continue raising funds for various good causes.

"Kevin used to attend all our charity nights with former players and once said to me 'I really hope my name is able to help others in years to come'," said Mr Thompson.

"At the time, I didn’t know what to say but that conversation always stayed with me so it's a no-brainer to keep his name and legacy alive and help others along the way, as he wished.

"Kevin’s family has given their blessing and we've also had support from the Professional Footballers' Association.

"We'll be looking to help various charities, such as the NHS, the Motor Neurone Disease Association and the Multiple Sclerosis Society.

"However, we're always willing to listen if there's another charity that needs help.

"We've got great aims and goals and our mission is to bring to the forefront, and raise awareness of, certain illnesses and charities.

"We convey passion and want to support people that really need it."

There are already plenty of fundraising ideas in the pipeline, including a function with former Ipswich player and manager Jim Magilton and ex-captain Matt Holland.

Both Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur have donated items to be auctioned on the night and others have agreed to contribute, including cricket legend Sir Geoffrey Boycott and comedian Micky Flanagan.

"This evening is to raise the profile of the foundation and help raise the funds needed to get it set up," added Mr Thompson.

"We've also managed a coup with a donation from the commander of the international space shuttle, and the first Canadian astronaut in space, Chris Hadfield.

"There will be lots of raffle prizes to be won, so it promises to be a cracking evening.

"Obviously, we're unable to confirm the date and venue at the moment but it will be later this year and in Ipswich.

Town fans have been raising money for a statue of Beat, known as The Beat.

This has now been designed and will be unveiled at the club's home in Portman Road soon, next to that of former manager Sir Bobby Robson.

To help raise funds for it, Mr Thompson had been planning a charity walk from Carlisle - Beattie's hometown - to Ipswich.

It has been postponed twice but will hopefully take place later this year.
