Police have revealed the details behind a seafront fight which broke out last night

A teenager has been arrested on suspicion of two offences after a man was assaulted on Thorpe Bay Gardens.

The 17-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm and being in possession of an offensive weapon.

During the incident, videos appear to show a Ford Fiesta being driven towards as pedestrian.

The teenager remains in custody.

A man aged in his late teens was found with a reported knife injury to his head, with witnesses earlier describing an altercation between two groups.

The man was taken to hospital and treated for his injury, which is not considered to be serious.

Officers have since recovered a Black Ford Fiesta in relation to the incident. 

No further injuries have been reported.

A spokesman from Essex Police, said: "We were called shortly before 9pm with reports of a disturbance at Thorpe Bay Gardens involving a large group of teenagers.

"Shortly before 10.30pm, we were made aware of a video circulating on social media, which appeared to show a dark coloured Ford Fiesta being deliberately driven at a white Ford Fiesta in the same area.

"The video then shows the occupants of the dark coloured Fiesta, get out and cause further damage to the white car.

"Our enquires continue.

"Anyone who witnessed the incident or has CCTV, mobile phone or dashcam footage are asked to contact Southend CID through our website, quoting incident 1298 of 23 June.

"Alternatively, please call 101 or independent charity Crimestoppers."

Southend District Commander, Chief Inspector Ian Hughes said: "Last night's incident will have understandably caused concern for the local community.

"The behaviour of those involved is unacceptable and our Criminal Investigations Department is working to find those responsible.

"I want to reassure you that we are working alongside our partners, in particular Southend Borough Council, to address community concerns and issues of anti-social behaviour and deter activity like this from happening again.

"We will have additional officer patrols in the Thorpe Bay Gardens area and will continue to maintain a visible presence there.

"If anyone has any information about last night's incident, or has any concerns, please come and speak to us. We're here to listen and take action against those who cause problems in our community."
