IT was just not meant to be.

Colchester United won the right to play in the League Two play offs with the prize of a Wembley final and promotion at their fingertips.

But in a behind-closed-doors match, the U’s were beaten losing 3-1 (and 3-2 on aggregate) to rivals Exeter.

The disappointment on the players’ faces was clear to see.

There was some joy for the country as a whole, however, as Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced the easement of lockdown restrictions with pubs, restaurants, hotels and museums being allowed to re-open from July 4.

Strict restrictions will be in place with waitresses advised to wear transparent masks.

There will be no standing at the bar either. Instead drinks will be ordered by apps and delivered to your table.

Reuseable menus too could be a thing of the past along with payment by cash.

Hairdressers too were told they could return to work as long as strict safety guidelines were followed.

There was new hope for holidaymakers hoping to grab some time away abroad with the first air bridges due to be announced.

However, for those stuck at home, there was also joy as temperatures topped 31C making England hotter than popular destinations such as Lanzarote and Spain.
