Police have issued urgent advice after a spike in steering wheel thefts.

The force say there has been a notable rise in thefts from vehicles across Castle Point, with BMW's a particular target.

Drivers have been urged to follow quick tips while police investigations continue.

A spokesman for Essex Police, said: "Lock the doors, close the windows and sunroof when you leave the car for any length of time.

"Use additional security devices overnight where possible, steering locks, and gear locks.

"Don’t leave anything on display – even a jacket can be an appealing target for a thief.

"Remove the stereo facia if you can, and remove satellite navigation devices where possible, including the support cable and suction pad.

"Wipe away any suction pad marks left on the windscreen or dashboard.

"Tuck in wing mirrors and put the aerial down to discourage vandalism.

"Never store your car’s documents in the vehicle.
