BASILDON Crown Court has been handling more serious criminal cases in the past week.

A number of people have been given jail terms for various crimes conducted in the south of the county.

Here is a rundown of some of the major cases.

Daniel Heath

Echo:

Daniel Heath breached his suspended sentence by going to his former partner’s home in Holbech Road, Basildon on July 19 this year and hurling abuse at her and demanding to use her toilet.

The 35-year-old of Lottem Road, Canvey had been spared jail just days before on July 6 for previous acts of violence against the same woman.

He subjected her to a campaign of abuse and threats using weapons to damage her property while drunk.

In the latest incident, he went to her home to collect some belongings, which was not a breach, but in the early hours of the morning of July 19 he demanded he be allowed to sleep in her garden, and use her toilet.

He was jailed for a year and seven months.

Robert Smith, John Taylor and Adam Cowan

Echo:

Robert Smith

Robert Smith, Adam Cowan and John Taylor were all caught inside a house in a small village preparing more than five kilograms of the class A drug.

The home, near Apton Hall Road, Canewdon, was raided by police on October 15 last year. The home belonged to Smith, 44.

Echo:

John Taylor

Taylor, 53, of Kings Road, Basildon, had been spotted on two previous occasions going into the home by police.

On the second occasion on June 10, Taylor was stopped by police and arrested.

He was found to be in possession of 997 grams of cocaine with an 80 per cent purity.

Basildon Crown Court heard on Friday last week that Taylor said to police on his arrest: “You were not wearing uniforms, I thought I was getting attacked again.”

Francis Thomas

Echo:

Francis Thomas claimed to “admire the artistry” of an indecent image of a child found in his possession following an inspection of his Westcliff home by police.

The 70-year-old of North Road was already subject to a sexual harm prevention order and a community order.

The community order meant he was under supervision by police and had to declare devices with access to the internet, and declare any users he created on social media sites.

He was jailed on Friday last week.

Chad Ouzman

Echo:

Chad Ouzman, who taught boxing in Isleworth, has been jailed for more than three years after he was caught trying to supply cocaine to users around south Essex.

The 46-year-old of Radford Way, Billericay was pulled over by police as part of a routine check, but officers soon found he had 18 wraps of cocaine inside of his car.

Ouzman, who is the father of a 16-year-old boy, also had a total of £1,600 in his car, which police deduced was proceeds from dealing other drugs of Class A.

Two telephones were also found, with the Nokia and Samsung models having messages and inbound calls related to drug dealing.

He was jailed for three years and four months.
