A THUG has been convicted of a violent attack on three police officers.

Samuel Langley was convicted by a jury yesterday of causing grievous bodily harm to one officer and assaulting two others.

The 26-year-old of Hartington Lodge, Southend, refused to come to Basildon Crown Court from prison for his trial, which ran from Monday to Tuesday.

Langley was charged with causing GBH without intent and two counts of assault of an emergency worker which all took place on August 12 last year.

The jury was shown footage of Langley arriving at the front desk of Southend Police Station, and officers were tasked with arresting him, as a warrant was out for him as he had breached previous restrictions.

The body-cam footage from one of the officers showed him approaching Langley, telling him the situation, before Langley descended into a rage and swung his fists at the officers.

One of the punches collided with an officer’s jaw, and he was knocked backwards and his head hit something on the floor.

The officer’s top lip was split and he required some treatment.

Prosecutor David Jones had told the jury the officers had started at 6am that day before the attack happened at around midday, and that the officers had just expected it to be “a standard Monday”.

Later on, when Langley was being held in a cell, he spat at an officer which landed on his cheek.

The jury was sent out to deliberate at lunchtime yesterday, and before the end of the day had returned unanimous guilty verdicts on all three counts.

Langley, who was not represented during the trial, will now face a potential custodial sentence for his crimes.

The case has been listed for an extension of custody time limit hearing and a sentencing on Monday next week at the same court.

The maximum sentence for causing grievous bodily harm without intent is five years in prison.
