Southend Central Museum is set to re-open to visitors tomorrow, as bosses put a whole host of Covid security measures in place to keep them safe.

Guests will be able to visit the internationally acclaimed Prittlewell Princely Burial as well as the Wild Estuary exhibitions at the museum, which is based on Victoria Avenue.

It will be open from 10am until 5pm, and social distancing measures will be in place with a limit on the number of people allowed on site.

The rule of six will apply, with no groups larger than six people able to visit together.

All visitors will be required to wear a face covering, unless they are exempt, and the museum has the NHS Track and Trace app at the ready for visitors to scan.

Anyone not able to scan this will be asked for details for track and trace.

Staff, who will be wearing face coverings, say they look forward to finally welcoming visitors back to the museum.

Key mentions kept at the site include the Prittlewell Princely Burial- an internationally significant Anglo-Saxon burial chamber discovered in Prittlewell Essex in 2003; and the Wild Estuary exhibition which explores the wildlife that lives in the estuary, the people who interact with the estuary, and the modern threats to this fragile ecosystem.

Speaking of the re-opening, Councillor Kevin Robinson, cabinet member for business, culture and tourism, said: “I am delighted to see Southend Central Museum opening its doors to the public once again.

“Engaging in cultural activity is demonstrated to be an important contributor to good mental health, which is all the more important at a time when many of us have dealt with lengthy periods of isolation.

“We have put measures in place to ensure that the public can enjoy these excellent exhibitions safely and ask all visitors to abide by the guidance.

“I would like to thank the council’s museums team and volunteers for the hard work that has gone into creating a safe environment for visitors and reopening one of Southend’s cultural gems.”

Central Museum will be open from Tuesdays to Saturdays, 10am – 5pm and is free to enter.
