EACH and every day, criminals cause misery across South Essex, whether it be with violence, drug dealing or depraved sexual acts.

Here are the faces of the people police brought to justice in November and have received substantial jail sentences.

John Berry

Echo:

A VIOLENT thug punched, kicked and stamped on his ex-partner leaving her with a broken jaw and cheekbones.

John Berry had got into the woman's address as she tried to get out of the property.

He grabbed her, pinned her against a wall, and then knocked her to the floor.

Berry, 32, of Mansfield Mews, Quedgeley, Gloucester, then proceeded to punch, kick, and stamp on her.

Eventually she passed out, waking later in her neighbour’s property.

She had sustained broken cheekbones, a broken jaw, and a lacerated spleen.

He was later charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent and admitted it.

Daniel Williams

Echo:

A THUG who has racked up 103 crimes throttled a 13-year-old boy with a lanyard and headbutted a street ranger who tried to step in.

Daniel Williams, 28, has been jailed for a year for robbing the boy of the lanyard he wore around his neck while in Southend High Street.

The teen had gone to the Burger King restaurant on August 5 and was outside when he noticed Williams glaring at him.

Williams, from Southchurch Avenue, Southend, then approached the boy, yelling at him, asking if he was part of a business group.

When the boy replied he wasn’t, Williams grabbed the lanyard and twisted it, leaving the teen fighting for breath.

Williams continued to swear at him, saying he had “no right” to wear a lanyard because he wasn’t disabled, and managed to take it away from him.

The boy was left “extremely upset” by the attack and approached a street ranger for help.

The ranger approached Williams, asking for the lanyard back.

When he refused, the ranger tried to physically take it from him.

In response Williams headbutted the ranger to the lip.

He went on to admit robbery and assaulting an emergency worker and was jailed at Basildon Crown Court.

John Doak

Echo:

A FATHER has been jailed for three years after admitting the manslaughter of his son, whom he shook as a baby nearly 20 years ago.

Jack Mitchell was born a healthy child in January 2001 and responded well following his birth.

However, between March and May of the same year, when Jack lived in Laindon, there were four occasions where he stopped breathing.

He was medically revived but there were no signs of what caused these episodes.

On each occasion, his father John Doak had been in sole care of him.

On the fourth occasion, Jack was rushed to hospital where he was found to have sustained retinal haemorrhages and subdural haematomas – evidence of severe trauma.

A paediatrician believed his injuries to be the result of ‘shaken baby syndrome’ and while Jack survived, he had sustained severe, irreversible brain injury.

Sadly, he died in 2016, aged 15 in Colchester Hospital. A forensic post-mortem examination found he had died from a pulmonary infection and pneumonia as a result of the injuries he suffered as a baby.

Following a review of Jack’s death, Doak, 37, of Delgate Avenue, Spalding, was summonsed to appear at court in September last year to face a charge of murder.

At Chelmsford Crown Court he admitted manslaughter and he was sentenced to three years in prison.

Gabriel Uttley

Echo:

A TEACHER who indecently assaulted four children has been jailed.

Gabriel Uttley denied the crimes against three boys and one girl under the age of 16, but was unanimously convicted of seven counts by a jury following a five-day trial at Basildon Crown Court

All of the crimes took place when Uttley, 62, was employed as a teacher at Beauchamps High School in Wickford.

On multiple occasions Uttley sexually touched the children over and under their clothing.

On the most serious occasion, Uttley touched and performed sex acts on a child under their clothing.

After the verdicts were read out, Uttley, dressed in a blue shirt and wearing a poppy, held his head in his hands fighting back tears while Recorder William Clegg QC lambasted him.

On the most serious offence, Recorder Clegg jailed Uttley for four years, with concurrent prison sentences on the seven other counts.

Uttley, of Lundy Close, York, will serve at least half of his sentence behind bars before being eligible for parole.

Recorder Clegg thanked the jury for their service.
