A Rochford pub which was hit by floods has been left with water damage after a nearby reservoir burst its banks.

Fire crews were called yesterday (January 14) around 11am to the Horse and Groom pub - based on Southend Road - with reports it had been flooded.

By the time the team had arrived, the building was already found to be in "very deep water".

The Rochford Reservoir sits close to the pub, which is situated around four metres below the river level.

And using pumps, crews were successfully able to remove the floodwater out of the building - which has suffered significant damage.

A flood alert was also issued for the River Roach, Prittle Brook and Eastwood Brook in Southend.

This was due to the risk that minor flooding would be likely to low-lying land, roads and riverside areas around the Prittle Brook and Eastwood Brook.

A spokesperson for Essex Fire Service said: "The fire service were called around 11am yesterday morning to reports of flooding at a public house in Rochford.

"The property affected is situated 4 meters below the river level so was in very deep water when crew arrived.

"Fire crews used a pump to pump water out of the building which has suffered water damage.

"The river is tidal, so thankfully the levels soon started to drop. Fire crews left the property in the care of the owners."
