NOTHING in this world would prepare any parents-to-be to make the heartbreaking decision to end the pregnancy for the sake of their child’s health.

Now a devastated couple have shared the heartbreaking moment their world crumbled when they lost their baby boy just six months into the pregnancy.

Sharna Bullen, 33, and Samuel Wall, 32, lost their son, Joshua Kenneth Wall, on September 28 last year after a scan revealed their baby’s frontal lobe had not developed properly.

The couple have spoken out on the tragic loss of their baby in the hope of supporting other families and to raise money for a charity that supported them.

Sam told the Echo: “Up to this point we’d had a really good pregnancy.

“Sharna was carrying really well and the baby was moving every evening and keeping us both entertained. At this point, we didn’t know the sex of the baby but were beyond excited to become parents.

“The devastating news came as part of a second 20 week scan that we had at 22 weeks because a consultant wasn’t available the first time.

“We learned our baby’s frontal lobe had not properly developed, meaning their quality of life would be severely reduced.

“After further scans and being referred to Great Ormand Street Hospital, it was agreed that a termination for medical reasons would be the best for our baby.

“During this time, our world pretty much crumbled over and over again.

“We just didn’t know the stats on baby loss or that we could potentially receive such heartbreaking news so late into the pregnancy.”

Sharna and Sam were advised by their midwife to speak to ARC, a group which offers support to families during the discussion and after the birth. It offers private support forums for both parents to vent, seek comfort and hear other peoples’ stories.

Sam said: “We were advised by our midwife to speak to ARC, who were amazing.

“ARC really helped break down some of the guilt that can surround a decision like this, something no parent wants to ever have to do but knows is the right thing for their child. In the weeks and months that followed Joshua’s birth, Sharna in particular took comfort in chatting to other mums in the forum.”

Sam and Sharna are raising money for ARC who helped them enormously during a time of need.

Sam runs a fitness bootcamp and started the #100BagsBootcamp challenge to raise money.

Sharna and Sam have run 100 miles to raise £1,800 for the charity.

They’re encouraging others to donate and raise money too by joining in on the #100BagsBootcamp challenge by walking or running 100 miles in January 2021.

Sam said: “I run a local fitness bootcamp and have always been a practical person when it comes to fundraising. With the current restrictions in place, I was very keen to get my friends, family and bootcampers moving and sharing their progress online.

“The amount of support I have had from all of them throughout has been amazing.”

Sam and Sharna hope to raise as much awareness and money as possible for the charity that helped give them assurance at a time they felt helpless.

“The work ARC do in raising awareness and creating discussions around baby loss and termination for medical reasons is so valuable.

“Sharna and I felt it would be an amazing legacy to Joshua to help give back to them after all the support they provided.”
