A FAMILY are spearheading a fundraising mission to raise cash for our NHS in memory of their beloved uncle who suddenly died from coronavirus.

George McGhie, of Rackenford, Shoebury, passed away at the age of 82 in Southend Hospital on January 11 after a short battle with the virus.

His niece, Nola Hedderman, has paid tribute to her uncle who will be “really missed”.

She said: “Me and my little boy were really close to him. He always had a joke and always had time to listen and talk. We will definitely miss his sense of humour. He knew how to capture a room for sure. It just still seems unreal. He will be really missed.”

His family are coming together at a time when they’re forced to stay apart by raising money to buy respiratory equipment for the Rochford Ward at Southend Hospital.

George’s 16-year-old nephew, Liam Clarke, set up the fundraising page and has been overwhelmed by the response as they’ve already raised more than £1,900.

Liam said: “I’m completely astounded really. What that can do for the ward and the hospital in general and the amount of respiratory equipment that we could be able to provide to them will hopefully make a massive, massive difference. “
