Snow is forecast to sweep across the country this weekend during the latest cold snap.

A yellow weather warning has been put in place throughout Essex for snow and ice.

According to the latest forecast, there is a 40 per cent chance of a sleet or snow shower at 5pm in south Essex today.

But a more prolonged period of sleet or snow could sweep across the region tomorrow.

Here is what the forecast says for each part of south Essex:

Southend

The town could see sleet or snow from 1pm onwards on Sunday. There is a 28 per cent chance at the moment and a forecast for snow or sleet shows showers will continue until at least 7pm.

The top temperature will be 3c, but forecasters say it will feel more like -1c across most parts of south Essex.

Basildon

The forecast for Basildon is much the same as Southend, with snow or sleet arriving from 1pm onwards on Sunday.

The top temperature will be 3c.

Canvey

Snow could also arrive in Canvey from 1pm onwards, with showers continuing throughout the afternoon.

The top temperature will be 3c.

Billericay

Sleet, snow or rain could begin falling from 1pm onwards. The chances of precipitation are reduced compared to other areas however, with the highest (24 per cent) at 1pm.

The top tempuarture will be 3c.

Brentwood/Thurrock

There is a 26 per cent chance of rain, sleet or snow in Brentwood between 1pm and 6pm on Sunday.

The top temperature will be 3c.
