Two rabbits which were dumped in a cardboard box in a field have been nursed back to health.

The duo were found by a dog walker who kindly picked them up and took them to Hopefield Animal Sanctuary in Brentwood.

Both rabbits were said to be in poor condition, with very long nails and matted fur.

Experts say these signs indicated they weren't being looked after properly for a while.

The team at the sanctuary gave the two rabbits a manicure, cleaned them up, and made sure they got plenty of attention.

The sanctuary has named the black rabbit Morgan and the grey one Owen.

They had their first round of vaccines and will be returning in a few weeks for the second.

Bosses at Hopefield, which is based near Brentwood, say some of the “unexpected” vert bills have been covered by donations.

Around £1,030 was raised to help the two rabbits.

Hopefield is reminding people of the responsibilities of being a pet owner having helped Morgan and Owen back to health.

A spokesman added: “We would like to remind the public that if you are thinking of getting a pet, please remember that they are living, life-long commitments and not toys for you to throw away when you get bored.

“We're aware of the temptations of getting a pet due to the lockdowns, however, please think about the long-term commitments you are making.”
