A beach cleaner has been hailed for her efforts after Southend was named the 36th best seaside destination in the country.
Research carried out by WWF-UK, in partnership with Sky Ocean Rescue, revealed Southend as the only Essex town in the top 50 hotspots.
The cleanliness of the beaches is thought to be one of the main reasons as to why Southend rated so highly in the survey.
Sally Lands has been put forward as a community hero for her hard work in keeping our beaches clean throughout the coronavirus pandemic.
The 54-year-old environmentalist is pleased to be playing her part in making our seafront so desirable.
Sally, of Westcliff, said: “I really enjoy the beach clean-ups.
“It started around Easter last year when lockdown began. I noticed a lot of rubbish on the beach opposite to where I lived and I just couldn’t ignore it.
“I have been heading out at 7am, tide permitting, to collect rubbish and it is really fulfilling.
“It is a small effort but every bag collected is one less bag on the beach and washed into the sea.
“We all know rubbish can endanger sealife and birds if it is washed away, so I strive to do everything I can to stop that.”

While she doesn’t volunteer her services in order to earn praise, Sally is pleased to see members of the community appreciating her efforts.
She added: “So many people say thank you for what I do.
“Sometimes runners or passers-by fleetingly shout out their thanks and it’s really nice to hear.
“I have also been given some rubbish bags by the Southend cleansing department.
“They have been very encouraging and helpful while I have been doing this.”
