Firefighters attempted to climb the equivalent height of Mount Everest at a popular south Essex shopping centre at the weekend - and exceeded their goal.

Essex Fire and Rescue Service crews attempted the 8,849 metres climb, roughly 900 ladder climbs, at Lakeside Shopping Centre on Sunday.

Impressed shoppers watched on and made donations as the firefighters took on the challenge for charity.

They exceeded their goal, making 1,215 climbs, and raised more than £1,000 for Firefighters Aid for Children.

The charity is run by Essex firefighters to support youngsters in the county.
