Police say a "significant" number of drivers put road workers at risk last night as they breached lane closures on a major road.

Lane closures were in place on the M25 in Brentwood last night (June 22) as roadworks were taking place.

However, roads policing officers say they dealt with 23 drivers who breached the "red X" lane closures, "putting workers at risk".

As well as these motorists, a large number of drivers who they also noticed breaching the closures will receive notices of intended prosecution (NIP) in the post.

An Essex Police spokesman tweeted: "Roads policing officers dealt with a significant number of drivers putting roadworkers at risk by breaching the red X lane closures on the M25 at Brentwood last night.

"In addition to the 23 dealt with in person, a significant number of drivers will receive NIPs in the post."
