FORMER Colchester United midfielder Alex Gilbey insists play-off bound MK Dons have a ‘job to do’ when they host Sutton United on Saturday.

The Dons are already in the League Two play-offs having clinched fourth spot but host a Sutton side who need to win and hope Colchester lose to Crewe Alexandra, along with a goal swing in their favour, to stay up.

Gilbey, 29, who made more than 100 appearances for Colchester after emerging through their academy ranks, is looking to finish the regular league season on a high, ahead of the play-offs.

And the former Gilberd School pupil insists his team will be going into the game looking to win.

Gilbey told the MK Dons website: “Every game is still important.

“We want to go into the play-offs full of momentum, get the lads confident so we’re looking forward to Saturday to win another game of football.

“Sutton are fighting for their lives and since (Steve) Morison has gone in, their upturn has been incredible to be fair to them.

“So fair play to them but we’ve got a job to do.

“We know what we want out of the game and we know what we’ve got going forward, so we’ll be at the best we can be.

“Colchester wouldn’t want to be down there but in the last few years, they’ve been there or thereabouts so hopefully, the club can turn around now the Cowleys are in and pick up their form and get to where they should be.”

Gilbey has been in excellent form for MK Dons this season and has bagged 12 league goals, his best-ever scoring season.

The former U’s youngster says he is flourishing playing for Mike Williamson’s promotion-chasing side.

“I’m really enjoying my football,” added Gilbey, who made his professional debut at Colchester at the age of 17 and made 121 appearances for the U’s before joining Wigan Athletic in 2016.

“I’m really, really happy off the pitch.

“It’s obviously great to be back here and stuff and everything at the minute just seems aligned, so long may that continue.

“I had a really good pre-season, a really tough pre-season but it’s mentally and physically got me to where I want to be and thankfully, I’m flourishing.”
