I enjoyed the letter by Sally Edward (July 11), when she preferred Southend Pier to be a place of tranquility without a rollercoaster.
I, too, would like that prospect, but all the options she listed would not be enough to make the pier an attraction it once was in its heyday.
New generations have changed their ideas on entertainment, and youngsters would find the view of rollercoaster near the end of the pier more irresistible than the prospect of a cream tea and brass band.
The rollercoaster I feel should not be obtrusive, and if Epic World Leisure has come along with such a ride that I think it has, then it should be considered.
That way Southend Pier would still retain its refuge from the crashing bedlam of the fairground at its shore end, yet still be an attraction for all ages.
Then us more sedate members of society could still enjoy the pleasures of a tea room, boat trips, etc, and, who knows, I might even brave a ride on the rollercoaster!
