ESSEX cricket club’s Ravi Bopara and Maurice Chambers have been called up to England Lions for their tour of the West Indies in the new year.

The selectors named the squad yesterday and the Essex duo were in the side which will also feature Ashes bowler Steve Finn.

The Lions will play four-day, first-class matches against Barbados, Combined Campuses & Colleges, Guyana, Jamaica, Leeward Islands, Trinidad & Tobago, and Windward Islands.

They will depart for the Caribbean on January 24 and will return to the UK on March 28 to prepare for the domestic season.

England selector Geoff Miller said: “This will offer coaches and selectors an insight into whether players have the potential to develop into world class cricketers and thrive on the international stage.

“It is a balanced squad combining players who have had considerable exposure to international and first class cricket with younger players who have already shown considerable promise.”
