RAIL company c2c has won a national award for its fleet of environmentally-friendly trains.

The company, which runs services between Shoebury and London Fenchurch Street, was highly commended at the National Transport Awards ceremony in London.

The award was for a ground-breaking braking system introduced to c2c’s fleet last year.

The initiative has reduced the power consumption of 74 of the firm’s electric trains by as much as 20 per cent. It uses a system which generates electrical power when the brakes are put on, then directly sends the power back into the supply network.

Julian Drury, managing director for c2c said: “We are committed to looking at ways to minimise our impact on the environment and make it simpler for our customers to choose a greener transport system.”
