A TEENAGER in a stolen car was injured in an accident which also left another motorist seriously hurt. Police and fire crews were called to the junction of Bournemouth Park Road and North Avenue, Southend, just after 11pm on Wednesday, after a grey Volkswagen Jetta collided with a stolen red Metro.

On Friday the 17-year-old driver of the Metro was still in a critical but stable condition in Southend Hospital.

The driver of the Volkswagon, a 46-year-old father of two from Thorpe Bay, is in intensive care at hospital.

He had to undergo emergency stomach surgery following the crash.

The force of the smash pushed the Volkswagen on to the pavement and through a front garden wall, where it stopped just inches from a resident’s home on the corner of the junction. Two crews from Southend and Leigh fire stations cut both men from the wreckage.

Southend station commander Martyn Hodder said: “It was one of the worst crash scenes I’ve seen in Southend recently.

“I can’t praise the paramedics enough. Our crews worked hard to release the two casualties. We all really worked as a team to ensure no one suffered any further injuries.

“We prioritised the lad in the Metro who was deemed to have life-threatening injuries, and we got him out in about ten minutes.”

The 17-year-old from Southend suffered serious head injuries.

Police investigating the accident closed the road around the junction for six hours as police examined the scene and debris was cleared.

Essex Police said the Metro was reported stolen from Riviera Drive, Southend, on Friday July 18.
