A SOLDIER joined forces with TV hardman Ross Kemp and braved the winter chill to launch a Christmas campaign for troops abroad.

Colour Sergeant Tim Bull, from Vange, along with soldiers from 2nd Battalion of the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, gathered beside Tower Bridge to met up with the former EastEnders star.

More than 24,000 boxes full of gifts have been collected by the forces charity, UK4U Christmas Box Campaign.

They are now destined for Army, RAF and Royal Navy personnel serving across the world on December 25.

Actor and Sky One presenter Ross Kemp, who has fronted an award-winning documentary about soldiers in war-torn Afghanistan, arrived at the launch in a military boat.

Sgt Ball, 39, said: “This is a great idea.  “Christmas is an odd time of year for the Forces. We’re usually on duty, so it’s generally one of those things you know you’re going to have to sacrifice.

“A little thing like this to look forward to would be a huge boost to morale on the front line for those away from home.

“And don’t forget some soldiers come from broken homes, so they might not be getting a personal gift from family.

“A present from someone who cares, saying thank you in this special way will make them feel really appreciated. We all like to be loved.”

Sgt Bull, a former Chalvedon School pupil, has just returned from serving in Cyprus. Part of his job now is being responsible for the welfare of his colleagues.

He added: “I work in the welfare department, so I know how important these gifts really are in raising someone’s spirits.

“It was also great to see Ross there. He has spent a lot of time with troops on the front line so he really knows what he’s talking about.”

Ross, who used to live in Shenfield, added: “My time spent in Afghanistan has given me a great insight into what life is like for the men and women of our Armed Forces.

“I know how much it will mean to them to receive these boxes, and the message of support and thanks from the public that comes with them.”
