CHILDREN were spellbound by an afternoon of storytelling at Basildon Library.

A Christmas-themed event saw dozens of children visit the library on Saturday to hear classic tales read out.

Librarian Sandy Howells was storyteller while colleagues dressed in costume and played characters from the tales.

Graham Herbing, a librarian who organised the event, said both parents and children enjoyed the stories.

He said: “The children were animated when they heard the stories read out and everyone said they would come back.

“I think it’s really important because we’re trying to interest children in reading and learning more.”

This Saturday there will be an African-themed storytelling session, to celebrate the launch of local author Paula Sofowara’s new children’s book Discover Nigeria.
