SANTA arrived in style on a boat in Old Leigh and was greeted by dozens of excited children.

He was made to feel welcome by youngsters dressed as snowmen, reindeer, penguins and elves.

They escorted him through the town to his grotto at the Lynn Tait Gallery in the High Street.

Owner Lynn Tait said: “Seeing all the children’s faces when they met Father Christmas and his furry friends was such a pleasure.

“All the proceeds from the day and everything collected at the grotto will be given to Action Medical Research. We’re hoping to beat last year’s total of £1,350.”

She said the grotto had won national awards with its authentic Victorian bedroom featuring original artefacts.

Children visiting Father Christmas will see him surrounded by more than 15 moving furry animals, including 6ft polar bears and life-size reindeer and husky dogs.

He will be in his grotto every weekend until Christmas, and on December 22, 23 and 24 between 10.30am and 1.30pm, and between 2pm and 4.30pm.

Each child can enjoy a chat with Father Christmas and receive a present.

A free treasure hunt, with a reward, to find Santa’s missing friends in Old Leigh will also be taking place.
