FOLLOWING concerns about the suitability of Hadleigh castle as an Olympic venue, Essex County Council has announced another consultation with local residents.

The council will hold another public information meeting tomorrow at Castle Point Council offices, to allay fears about the castle grounds being used for the 2012 mountain biking course.

In the first of two public consultations, Hadleigh residents in particular raised concerns the event will cause irreparable damage to the park and heavy traffic congestion to local roads when thousands of fans arrive for the event.

Hadleigh councillor Bill Sharpe said he was yet to be convinced the Olympic proposal was sufficiently detailed.

He said: “At the moment I don’t think it’s clear enough. I want to know exactly what is going to be put in place at Hadleigh castle.”

But, Mr Sharpe added he had every confidence the finished plans would be a success.

He said: “The council is listening and it is slowly going through the process to achieve a good image for the area, a high-standard Olympic event and, most importantly, that the residents don’t suffer from the event.”

Katie Canning, of Essex County Council, said the third consultation was being undertaken in order to inform the maximum number of residents.

She said: “ We just wanted to make sure the plans were viewed by the most people possible.”

The council has also launched a new website, with detailed information on how the 2012 Olympics will affect Essex.

The website, which also carries information about business and tourism opportunities connected to the event, is at www.essex.gov.uk/london2012
