A GRATEFUL family has donated more than £1,300 to the critical care unit at Southend Hospital.

The donation was made in memory of David Rayner, 68, of The Broadway, Southend, who was treated at the unit before he died.

His wife, Louise Rayner, presented an infusion pump to staff at the unit after asking for donations instead of flowers at Mr Rayner’s funeral.

His family were so impressed with the care he received in his four days in the unit, following a diagnosis of multiple cancers and organ failure.

Critical care ward manager Karen Kinnear said: “Many patients need several infusions consecutively and this equipment allows two drips to be infused at the same time.

“We understand this is a very difficult time for the family and we are always grateful when we receive extra equipment to help other patients.”

Mrs Rayner said: “Our friends and family would like to say a big thank you to all the staff in the critical care unit for their care of David and support for the family during his short stay in there.

“The staff were always lovely and I can’t speak highly enough of the hospital.”
