MORE than 6,000 Canvey residents have rejected council plans to build on the island’s green belt following an unofficial referendum.
In all, 6,493 people registered their unofficial vote over Castle Point Council’s plans to build 400 homes on green space near the Dutch Village.
The residents resoundingly rejected the plans, with 6,437 votes against, compared to just 56 votes for – a majority of more than 99 per cent.
A jubilant Graham Bracci, chairman of the Canvey Green Belt Campaign, said the result showed public hostility towards the plans.
