Firefighters and police rushed to Tilbury docks in the early hours of this morning (Wednesday) following reports of a chemical spill.
The leakage of a corrosive liquid called paraquat dichloride was coming from a cargo container that has been dislodged and fallen on its side.
Seven fire crews were called at about 3.45am and managed to stem the leak and prevent the chemical from spilling into the sea.
Specialist contractors have been called in to clear up the chemical, while police remain at the scene.
No one was injured.
