A MAJOR new development of 46 new seafront flats, along with cafes, bars, or restaurants is taking shape.

Planning permission was granted on appeal in 2006 for the blocks of one and two-bedroom flats, on the site of the old Canvey Casino, off Eastern Esplanade.

The development is finally taking shape with 24 homes for sale and 22 to rent as social housing.

The one-bedroom flats are likely to cost between £100,000 and £110,000, while two bedroom homes could cost between £125,00 and £135,000.

It is hoped restaurants, cafes, takeaways, or bars will open underneath the flats, next to the Monico pub.

Scott Nelson, from estate agent Bairstow Eves, said: “The building work is coming along. We think most of the new flats won’t be completed until next August, but there should be a show flat available early next year.”

The Echo understands the social housing flats will be rented out through Estuary Housing Association.

Lynn Seabrook, 47, who lives in nearby May Avenue, Canvey, said: “I was told there are going to be shops or bars at the front, so I hope they’re going ahead with that and it won’t just be flats. That wouldn’t be right for the seafront.

“It’s all very well building new homes for sale, but most young people can’t afford to buy any more.

“It’s important that some of them go to the council, so they can be let out at a rate people could afford.”
